The Buddha Shakyamuni Seated upon an Elaborate Lotus Throne with Shakyamuni Repeated in Corners
18th century
Description
Painting in hanging scroll (thangka) format, with streamers, veil and decorative stitched borders, belongs to a set of eleven thangkas.
Painting with decorative borders, mounted on support panel. Would have originally been in thangka format. Shakyamuni Buddha sits with his right hand in bhumisparsa mudra and his left hand in dhyana mudra. He has a chakra on the palm of his hand. He sits on an elaborate lotus throne and emanates green and blue light rays. The throne back consists of foliage populated by elephants, lions, kinnaras, and makaras. There is an offering table before the Buddha. Below, two monks, the disciples of the Buddha stand holding staffs and begging bowls. Above the Buddha is a Garuda holding a jewel and a canopy. To the left and right are Buddhas making the dharmachakra mudra. At the bottom of the painting, two deer appear beside a dharmachakra on a lotus, amidst offerings.
