这幅保存完好的绘画创作于公元985年，描绘的是观音菩萨的十一面六臂化身。画中配有《法华经》偈颂的插图，旨在彰显这位菩萨无所不在、时刻关注苦难信众的特质：画面展示了观音从火灾、悬崖、恶魔袭击和牢狱之灾中解救信徒的场景。

此作是陈列于第2740号展厅的一批敦煌（位于中国西北部甘肃省）莫高窟书画作品之一。1900年，莫高窟的守护者王圆籙偶然发现了封存的藏经洞，从而揭示出一个藏有超过五万件手稿、绘画、经幡等文物的宝库。这幅画据信便是出自这批文物。自1907年起，王圆籙将这些文物中的很大一部分出售给探险家和学者，以换取资金修缮洞窟。题记表明，这幅画的供养人是敦煌当地统治者曹宗寿，他于公元985年将此画供奉给僧人圆满。画面右下角身着黑袍、手持香炉者即为曹宗寿；而圆满则端坐于其正上方，手持经卷。
