A black stone stele of Padmapani
Nepal, 14th century

Expressively carved standing on a double-lotus base flanked by two attendants, his right hand lowered in varada mudra and the left grasping the stem of a lotus, clad in a diaphanous dhoti with foliate hems fanning to the sides, a sacred thread around the torso and the antelope skin draped across his shoulders, his benevolent face with crisp features, gentle smile and downcast eyes, his hair piled in wavy tresses with a row of curls emerging from a high foliate tiara centered by a seated Amitabha, flanked by flowerheads and backed by a perforated halo with stylized flames further surrounded by an arched torana

此像雕造生动，呈站立姿于双层莲座之上，两侧各有一尊胁侍。右手低垂结施与印（varada mudra），左手持莲花茎。身披轻薄透明的裙袍（dhoti），衣边饰有花叶纹，向两侧飘展。躯干围系圣线，肩部披挂羚羊皮。面容慈悲，五官清晰分明，面带温和微笑，双目垂视。头发以波浪状发绺高盘，发际线处饰有一排卷曲的刘海，高耸的花叶宝冠（tiara）中央安奉一尊阿弥陀佛坐像，两侧伴有花饰。身后为镂空头光，饰以程式化火焰纹，外围环绕拱形背屏（torana）。

This superbly carved sculpture depicts Avalokiteshvara as the lotus-bearer Padmapani, further identified by the antelope skin and the image of his spiritual father Amitabha in the crown.

这件雕刻精湛的雕塑所表现的观音菩萨（Avalokiteshvara）为莲华手（Padmapani，即持莲花者），其身份亦由所披羚羊皮及宝冠中其法身父阿弥陀佛（Amitabha）之像进一步确认。
