这尊庄严的佛首由深灰色石灰岩雕刻而成，神情宁静而超然，是唐代早期宗教造像的典型特征。唐代（距佛教初次传入中国约七百年后）皇室对佛教的护持，催生出了中国历史上一些最为宏伟的雕塑作品。在这尊佛首上，所有印度及中亚影响的痕迹已被中国本土的审美所取代。这一风格的造像见于河南省的龙门石窟寺群，或许正是此件的来源所在。
