A Large Gilt Bronze Figure of Vajradhara
Tibet, 15th Century
Seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base with scrolled tips and beaded rim, his hands holding his attributes of a vajra and ghanta with arms crossed in vajrahumkara mudra, wearing flaring sashes and a garment falling in pleats around his knees, beaded trefoil belt, foliate bracelets, armlets, necklace with pendent jewels, quatrefoil earrings and five-plumed headdress all inlaid with turquoise, his face in a gentle demeanor with arched brows centered by a turquoise inlaid urna and lips in a slight smile crowned by curled strands with hair in a braided bun surmounted by an inlaid cintamani, his headdress centered by a kirttimukha mask; the base sealed with incised visvavajra and with red lacquer on reverse and underneath

While the facial features are distinctly Tibetan, this piece was likely commissioned from a Nepalese craftsman, with the base lacquered red on the reverse being a specifically Nepalese characteristic.
