The central position often held by Vairocana in ‘maṇḍalas’ makes him one of the more important deities in Tantric Buddhism. The disposition of Candi Sewu is thought to reflect his ‘maṇḍala’. Here he is crowned and ornamented; the monastic Vairocana occurs in Java at Borobudur, and there are also some published bronzes of monastic type. This example shows exceptionally crisp and distinct detail of the figure, the scrolling of the throne-back and the double lotus base.

Register says:
Bronze figure of Buddha seated with the figure in mystic “Yoga” attitude. (Thumb of left hand held in fingers of right) On lotus throne with high square base. Rich ornaments and tiara. Nimbus behind head with flame border and two ornamented projections at side. Umbrella over head.
